Residents of Simoyon Village in Lower Subukia, are calling on the Nakuru county government to help them in managing the Simoyon dam that for many years has been claiming the lives of their children.
A section of the residents who spoke to this writer on Wednesday said the county government had promised to fence the dam last year, yet nothing has been done to date to safeguard their lives.
‘The county government has failed to fulfill its promise of fencing this dam to avert further tragedies. Right now we are in fear ahead of the April rainy season which will no doubt result in an increase of the dam's water levels," said Martin Kipkimonge.
The dam which sits on a five-acre land is a source of livelihood to more than 1,000 households in the village.
Area residents have also called on President Uhuru Kenyatta to intervene on the matter if the county government doesn't resolve the issue soon.
"It is time President Uhuru Kenyatta should step in and help us protect the lives of our children especially those passing around the dam when going to school. Two years ago we lost two children from one family in this dam while on their way from school," Martin further stated
The county government through County Secretary Joseph Motari had promised to build animal fetching points as well as erecting a fence around the dam three days after the drowning incident, but nothing of these has been done yet.
