A section of Nakuru residents marked the world toilet day with calls to the county government to offer free clean public toilets in the county.

The residents cited lack of toilets in the area which forces many to relieve themselves on the roadside or even on the pathways in town.

Speaking in Nakuru, the residents expressed fear that the county could not address the issue of cholera unless they offer the facilities.

“Asking someone to pay for using a toilet is inhumane. Most people cannot afford the Sh10 that is required every time one goes to use the facilities. In fact they should consider what will happen in case one has a running stomach,” said Kio Kinuthia, a resident said.

Kio cited that Machakos has 80 units of public toilets which are clean and well maintained. These units are free to use.

“I wonder why we cannot adopt the method and use it in all our sub counties so as to ensure that none of us contract any disease,” he added.

Victor Ngatia pointed out that majority of the slum areas in the county did not have toilets.

“In areas like Mogotio people are still using the bushes which in turn ends up on Rive Molo. Hence whenever cholera strikes it becomes a nightmare,” he added.
