The county government of Nyamira has warned residents who have reportedly been auctioning mosquito nets that were distributed by the county leadership in conjunction with World Health Organization.

This comes after revelation by Royal Media’s Egesa FM that most residents especially men were auctioning the nets in return for a glass of illicit brew.

Speaking at Nyabuya village in a burial ceremony on Tuesday, county chief health officer Dr Douglas Bosire warned those engaging in the unscrupulous businesses and urged the provincial administration to help arrest those involved.

“It’s sad to learn from the media that some people are selling the mosquito nets for a glass of chang’aa. That wasn’t the intention of the county when we distributed the nets and it will be fundamental if the provincial administration helps us to deal with the culprits,” Bosire said.

He said the county government was keen to carry out an audit per house hold as a way of tracing those who have been engaging in the unscrupulous dealings.

“We are not leaving any stone unturned and those who have been doing it should be ready to explain to authorities. We have the list of beneficiaries and my office is in touch with county commissioner’s office to find the moist suitable way of combating the predicament.

“Rains are very intense in this region and we issued the nets for a purpose. I am in talks with the county commissioner’s office to help us trace the offenders. As government, we are mandated to take care of lives of every resident,” he added.

The reports by Egesa FM indicated that Gachuba ward was severely affected with a number of residents catch by reporters auctioning the nets in exchange of liquor. At least every house received mosquito nets in a week long exercise that ended on Friday.
