Gatukuyu residents have been urged not to discriminate against the physically challenged and instead treat them the way they would treat normally-bodied members of the society.
A member of the county assembly, who is also a 2017 elections aspirant, Joseph Mwangi, took up the issue with some parents in the area who hide their disabled children for fear of being treated as the cursed members of the society.
''I just don’t know how normal people take the physically challenged. These people are talented, most of them rely on their own sweat but despite all this, we abandon them. Parents of physically challenged kids should not fear taking their children to school as that is the only way to help them grow,'' he noted.
Addressing residents in Gatukuyu town on Friday, Mwangi asked the county government to create equal opportunities of employment for those with disabilities.
He pointed out that training opportunities should also be equally shared in both the formal and informal sectors so that the physically challenged are able to feel they are equal in the society.
Mwangi commended the health department in the area for improving access to health services for populations in the remote parts of the county which he said had also helped the physically impaired.
He called upon women with physically impaired children to take advantage of the nearby brought health programs to access health services.
''I will be vying for the MCA sit in Mang’u Ward in 2017 and I believe I will be in a position to serve you better. I will prioritise education, gender imbalance, water, infrastructural growth and youth’s development,'' he revealed.
