Rights groups waging war against Female Genital Mutilation in Nyamira county have been faulted on their tactics employed to fight the menace.
Speaking on Wednesday in her Bogichora backyard, human rights activist cum politician Catherine Nyamato said the campaign had lost its objectives since the organizers allegedly held rallies in urban centers where most people were exposed instead of concentrating in rural areas.
She said holding the rallies in town could have little impact on combating the menace arguing that the real victims were ignored in the entire exercise.
“I am a crusader of Anti-FGM but I don’t think what a number of civil groups are doing will help us combat the menace. They are holding rallies in towns where most people are exposed living grassroots regions where the practice is common,” she said.
She also said that the groups had little solutions to give to the vulnerable children and their families’ alternatives and urged them to emulate their counterparts from Kisii county who had initiated training on targets as an alternative rite to passage.
“It really adds no value when you go to the streets and shout. Things are changing and they must come with a solution. It’s important that they learn from their counterparts in Kisii who have started a special training on the young girls as an alternative rite of passage,” she said.
Nyamato was however optimistic that the archaic practice will be eradicated with time since at least every member of the community, social groups and political elites from the region had joined hands against the menace.
