The country has recorded an increase in number of road accidents, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) director of road safety enforcement and accident investigations Hared Adan has said.
Adan said the fatalities now stand at 2,564 since January this year.
Adan said last year, the country recorded 2,445 fatalities across the country.
In Nyanza region, he pointed out that Kisumu County is leading in the fatalities cases this year, with Migori County recording the lowest.
“Nyanza recorded 256 fatalities, Kisumu leading with 78, Homa Bay 50 and Kisii 48, the lowest in this region is Migori,” he said.
Adan said the region is lagging behind in terms of compliance noting that NTSA has devised means to ensure compliance is increased.
Speaking at the Kisumu bus terminus where the authority was conducting a free clinic for the Public Service Vehicles on Wednesday, Adan said private vehicles contributed highly to the fatalities.
“Private vehicles are the killers on our roads, contributing 34 per cent, followed by heavy commercial vehicles at 23 per cent and PSVs 20 per cent,” he said.
He said there is a perception that PSVs are the major contributors of accidents on the roads, contrary to actual statistics.
