Police in Rongai have vowed to crack the whip on motorists who they say have formed it a habit of driving under the influence of alcohol this festive season saying that they were a threat to other road user.
Speaking at an accident scene on Sunday afternoon involving a bodaboda operator and a private car driver, area OCPD Richard Masinde sent a warning to the perpetrators saying that they will not relent to take action against them.
“Drinking is leisure while driving is a matter of life and death, we are not threatening anyone but only executing our duties of ensuring that all of us co-exist in a safe environment especially such a season that involves a lot of travelling,” he said.
Masinde promised to intensify patrols at the shopping centres especially the back street corridors where it is suspected that illicit brews business still thrived.
He called on parents to be on the lookout of what their teenage children engaged in saying that they were the most affected.
“As much as we try to ensure law and order, our wish is that everybody in the society plays their part well to avoid such instances, be your brother's keeper,” he advised.
In the incident, a bodaboda operator broke his left leg after he was knocked down by a private car driver, who escaped unhurt.
The two drivers were both drunk at the time of the accident, according to the police boss.
