Taxi and bodaboda operations in Ruiru town and its environs have been banned starting midnight following an increase in crime.
This comes after two taxi drivers were arrested following links that they were aiding criminals in conducting their criminal activities.
Speaking in his office on Wednesday, Ruiru OCPD Isaac Thuranira said unscrupulous riders were aiding criminals during such hours.
He said the taxis and bodabodas have no reason to operate past 12 because the last matatus that arrive at Ruiru town from Nairobi and other areas according to the sacco management is 11:30pm.
He said the operations have been banned with immediate effect and anyone arrested conducting the business past the stipulated time will be a criminal suspect.
He said the two taxi drivers arrested have been linked to aiding criminals by helping them escape after their operations and they get paid for that.
"We have numerously urged late time operators to help in curbing crime in the area but they have now turned to aiding criminals in their operations," he said.
"For that, I ban all operations involving taxis and bodabodas past midnight with immediate effect."
He said this was for security reasons in the area after numerous reports of robbery and smuggling during such hours.
He said most of those operators witness such crimes and even know the criminals but choose to be silent hence encouraging the activity.
