A section of traders and hawkers at Ruiru market have urged area MP Esther Gathogo to intervene and address the poor sanitation standards at the market.

The traders on Monday complained over what they termed as an unhygienic environment for business.

The traders claim that sanitation standards at the market are wanting and that the situation has been made worse by the ongoing rains.

“We are tired of conducting business in an unhygienic environment and we are calling upon our MP to intervene and have our market cleaned up,” said Mariam Mueni, a trader.

The traders complain that garbage is not collected on time despite them paying heft levies.

They are also lamenting over untreated sewer which they say has pushed their customers away.

Joseph Karani, a vegetable vendor at the market said that garbage collection is an issue. The trader alleges that it take days for county officials to collect garbage at the market.

“We are afraid of contracting diseases as a result of unhygienic environment,” he said.

Reacting to the trader’s claims, Kiambu County Chief Public Service officer Dominic Gicheru said that the county is working to address the matter.

Gicheru said that plans are underway to renovate and improve on the sanitation standards at the market.

However, Gicheru refuted claims of laxity on collection of garbage saying that county workers collect garbage on daily basis.
