Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KeRRA) has been urged to partner with the Kisumu County Government to construct bridges in Seme Sub-County.
Victor Nyagaya, a local politician said the authority should help ease the lives of locals by constructing Magada-Lung’a Bridge in Kolunje area.
Nyagaya said the current wooden bridge is in a poor condition and has led to many deaths in the area especially during rainy seasons.
He said a 50-year-old man on Sunday evening was swept away by waters when he was trying to cross that bridge at 8pm.
“The authority should help us to put up bridges that can last longer. We cannot continue losing our people like this,” he said.
He said close to five people including school children have died while crossing that bridge in the past.
Speaking to the press in Kisumu on Monday, Nyagaya said the authority should fund the construction of that bridge to avert more deaths.
He said when the river is full, it swells and overflows above the bridge whereby locals who attempt to cross are at a high risk of being washed down the stream.
"Life is precious and must be protected by the government through putting up structures that can help us live safely," he stressed.
“The county government must work in hand with KeRRA to find funds to build these bridges to save our people. It is the duty of the national and county governments to protect citizens,” he added.
