Deputy Governor Ruth Odinga has urged investors to promote gender balance while hiring workers.
This she said after the opening of Viitoria Hotel in Kisumu.
Ruth made the remarks referring to the hotel which she said had no women employed at the top management level.
The hotel located along Ring Road between Nyalenda and Millimani estates was recently completed and becomes the latest development in the county’s hospitality industry.
Ms Odinga went wild with the composition of the directors of the hotel who are all men.
During the official opening of the hotel on Friday, Governor Jack Ranguma paraded the nine member board of directors.
Ms Odinga however expressed disappointment with the composition of the directors saying it is a bad show for the female gender.
“Is it that the hotel is specifically for men? ” said Ms Odinga.
She added: “I was not invited for the official opening of the hotel and as a woman leader I was not pleased, especially now that the board of directors has no woman. Even if it is a private business I think there must be some gender sensitivity. How would the management convince us that they will employ women in that hotel if the board of directors is that gender imbalanced?”
“International Women’s Day is on March 8, and we fear that the steps made in mainstreaming gender issues is not showing within ourselves,” she added.
