About 370 head teachers and their deputies from primary and secondary schools from Nakuru County on Tuesday sat the Kenya Education Management Institute proficiency exams.

The tests which are done in all the 47 counties were held at Afraha High School and St Mary’s Primary for the Nakuru County. 

Speaking at Afraha High School, Mr. Moses Kiarie, Deputy County Quality Assurance and Standards Officer in the Ministry of Education confirmed that the proficiency tests are administered by the Kenya Education Management Institute which is a department in the Education ministry.

‘’The aim of the tests is to update and enhance education management skills for principals and their deputies both in public primary schools and high schools. The teachers are provided with materials concerning education management which they study for a specified period of time sit for exams on the same.’’ Mr. Kiarie explained.

The deputy county Quality assurance and standards officer went further to state that, the tests were mandatory to the teachers since promotions and confirmations of senior positions are based on this education management tests. 

According to Mr. Kiarie teachers who have done past tests and passed well have managed their schools in a professional manner including improved students performance.

“We administer the exams and certify the teachers then submit the results to the Teachers Service Commission.’’ Added Kiarie.
