Schools heads across the country should exert their authority by ensuring corporal punishments are eradicated from schools, Education CS Fred Matiang'i has said.

Speaking at Sironga secondary school on Friday, Dr Fred Matiang'i said school heads had prime responsibility of protecting children from the primitive culture which was banned by law over 15 years ago.

He said his ministry will be keen to take stern actions against school heads whose institutions will be found culpable of subjecting students to corporal punishments.

“We have been hearing of disturbing cases of corporal punishments and it is time that school heads take responsibility by cautioning their teachers from that primitive culture. My ministry will take an action on head teachers whose institutions will be found culpable of negligence. They protect children because they are the administrators,” he said.

He said the ministry of education will be executing impromptu visits to institutions across the country along with Members of TSC to assess the situation and maintained that school heads will be forced to carry responsibility on any unlawful torture inflicted to students.

“As a ministry, we will not allow our children to be subjected to harsh punishments. We will be moving around with officials from TSC and any teacher found culpable of imposing corporal punishment to students will be excommunicated. And its worth to note that school heads will take prime responsibility,” he said.

Mr Matiangi also urged school administrators to consider deploying guidance and counselors t help nurture the behavior of students.
