Individuals engaging in scrap metal business in Nakuru County have been blamed for occasioning massive vandalism of railway lines in the county.

Nakuru railway station commander Justin Ndunda Nsivo on Monday made the startling revelations and appealed to the dealers to be extra careful with the scrap metal they are obtaining from their customers, noting that they could have been stolen from the railways.

The railway officer further warned jua kali shed operators, especially those operating next to railway lines that very soon they will conduct a raid on them.

"We get reports on a daily basis of our properties being looted from the railway lines and we have evidence that scrap metal dealers and jua kali shed owners are largely contributing to these incidences. As a scrap metal dealer, it would be prudent enough to verify the nature of the metal your customer brings to you otherwise you could be the one promoting this illicit act," she said.

She further called on residents living around railway lines to help in the fight against vandalism, adding that their cooperation was much needed to help combat the crime.

"My humble appeal to those living near the railway lines is for them to report cases of vandalism and liaise with the police so that we can end this trend once and for all," she advised.
