Nyamira senator Mong’are Okong’o has insisted that the fight against Female Genital Mutilation in the region was likely to take a new twist if the provincial administration joins it fully.

Mr. Mong’are who led his team to rally against the vice on Sunday at Mekenene said many residents were still stuck in the primitive tradition since ‘nothing much’ was being done by the government in the region to take an action against the perpetrators.

He challenged provincial administrators to be on the frontline by arresting and subjecting those responsible in court to reduce the incidents.

“The fight against FGM is far from over and this is partly because the perpetrators haven’t been subjected to the rule of law,” he said.

He said that many of the chiefs and their assistants were aware of those responsible for the menace but knowingly or deliberately chose to ignore hence making it difficult for the well-wishers to deal with the issue.

“They (Chiefs and assistants) live with these people and I wonder why they fail to act on them. It even becomes difficult for NGO’s to clear out the menace but it will be simpler if we work as a team to wage a war against the vice,” he said.

He reiterated his commitment to combat the vice and said that he was ready to work with the chiefs and their assistants to ensure they bring to book the perpetrators.

“I have always been committed and I want to assure the public that I am ready to work with chiefs and their assistants to bring to book those responsible for the primitive extradition,” he added.
