The county government of Nyamira has been challenged to prioritise renovation of feeder roads in the county to boost agriculture.
Nyamira Senator Kennedy Mong’are Wednesday told reporters at Borabu Hotel that he was deeply concerned about the poor state of roads in the region.
He slammed the county government's efforts to improve the roads by terming it slow.
He challenged the county leadership to listen to complaints aired by members of the public and expedite renovation of roads in the county.
“I am deeply concerned with the state of many feeder roads in the area given the pressure we get from locals. The county government is a bit slow and I think they haven’t fully prioritised improving of road networks. This is an agricultural county and production region must be easily accessed,” he said.
Mong’are also accused some contractors of sleeping on their jobs and questioned the department of public works' reluctance to crack the whip on errant contractors.
“I am not saying that the county hasn’t done something but we want to see increased activities of fixing roads that are in dire need to be improved. I am also aware of cases in which lazy contractors are sleeping on their jobs. It's high time the public works department cracked the whip,” he added.
He also urged the county leadership to sit down with area MPs to identify roads that should be refurbished.
“I know the standoff between the counties and KeRRA, but it’s time for the two sides to sit and iron out their minor differences. Our MPs should be on the front line to champion for conducive roads for effective transportation of farm produce,” Mong’are said.
