The Transition Authority (TA) should have its term extended by Parliament to give it ample time of overseeing transfer of functions to counties, Nyamira Senator has said.
Mr Okong’o Mong’are joined his Kakamega counterpart Bonny Khalwale who on Saturday backed the extension of the authority's term.
TA's term expires in March this year.
Okong’o urged legislators to support the motion that is expected to be tabled in Parliament and said the move will allow stability in counties.
“Transitional Authority has a sole responsibility of bringing stability to our counties. There are a lot that needs to be done and I want to urge Parliament (Senate) to vote for TA’s extension when Khalwale tables the motion,” he said.
The Ford-Kenya Senator dismissed the disgruntled governors saying their determined opposition to TA’s extension of term was guided by their selfish interests.
“Governors should not hoodwink Kenyans that TA has finished doing its job. They want to control a number of things which TA hasn’t completed. There are a number of functions that haven’t been transferred and I think TA is in a good position to fix all. Transferring duties will be difficult if the mandate is left for counties and national government to determine,” he said.
Okong’o also urged MCAs across the country to play their oversight and legislation role effectively to put a strong foundation for county units.
“We understand the myriad of challenges our counties are going throw. We often hear of corruption and so on but MCAs have a responsibility of bring sanity to counties. As Senators, we are also determined to ensure the national government gives counties the necessary support,” he said.
