Nominated Senator Martha Wangare has proposed a raft of recommendations to the National Health Insurance Fund which she said is costly to the average Kenyan.

Wangare said she has drafted a bill proposing the scheme be devolved to county governments for better management and also lower the monthly costs.

“In the bill, I have proposed that NHIF be devolved to county governments because it will have a huge impact on the people at the grassroots more than now when it is under the central government,” she said.

She also said part other amendments have indicated that the cost should be lowered as Sh500 on a monthly basis is not affordable to many average Kenyans.

“When we talk of such a scheme that is meant to help poor people, we must then consider the fact that the current amount is too high for a common mwananchi. The bill is addressing this factor,” she said.

She spoke on Monday during a live TV interview on Inooro TV.

Wangare said the bill is set for first reading in the Senate once it resumes as the House is on recess.

She also said she will be vying for Gilgil parliamentary seat in 2017.
