Nominated senator Martha Wangari has accused Nakuru members of county assembly of fleecing county contractors by soliciting bribes for them before giving contracts.
Wangari said that she has received numerous complaints from contractors who said have been asked to pay bribes before being given contracts.
Speaking on Sunday when she presided over a fundraiser in aid of women with disabilities at Maili Sita, Wangari said that many of the contractors are making loses due to the bribes they pay to MCAs.
“Contractors have come to me complaining about MCA's who force them to pay bribes before but being given contracts ,and some contractors like women and the youth cannot afford to pay those bribes hence they end up missing tenders,"said Wangari.
She called on MCAs to be open when awarding tenders and stop what she called discrimination against women and youth contractors.
“When women and youth apply for tenders they are normally discriminated in the awarding of tenders and that should stop because it’s a violation of the constitution,” she said.
At the same time she called on women and the youth not to have the fear of applying for county tenders saying that it is their right to do so.
