Seven people were critically injured on Wednesday evening when a Nairobi bound 14-seater matatu collided head on with a bus at Muguga near Landless area along the Thika-Garissa Highway.
Confirming the incident on Thursday, Thika OCPD Erastus Muthamia said the bus which was heading in the opposite direction was trying to overtake another vehicle when it rammed into the Kinata matatu at around 8pm.
"Eyewitnesses told us that the bus was speeding and was trying to overtake another vehicle when it collided with the matatu which was heading to Nairobi from Kitui. No deaths have been reported but we can confirm that seven passengers including the matatu driver were critically injured, while 17 escaped with minor injuries," said Muthamia.
Muthamia said the injured passengers were taken to Thika Level Five Hospital where they are receiving treatment.
The bus and the matatu were towed to Thika Police Station, as officers lainch investigations into the actual cause of the accident.
Muthamia asked motorists using the narrow highway to avoid speeding and overtaking especially at night.
"We continue to urge motorists using the Thika-Garissa highway to avoid speeding and overtaking when the road is not clear to avoid such accidents. Motorists must remain careful especially at night," said Muthamia.
