Seven people died over the weekend in a grisly road accident involving a matatu and a truck at Bonje near Mazeras trading centre on the Mombasa-Nairobi highway.
Kaloleni acting OCPD Patrick Ngeiywa, who confirmed the accident, said the truck collided head-on with a matatu that was coming from the opposite direction.
Mr Ngeiywa said the driver of the truck which was heading to Mombasa lost control and hit the matatu head-on.
“The truck lost control and veered off the road hitting the matatu which was heading to Voi. Five people died on the spot while two died as they received treatment at the Mariakani sub-county hospital,” he said.
Mr Ngeiywa confirmed that the driver of the matatu was among those who died. He further said that the truck driver fled after the accident.
“We have launched investigations to establish the cause of the accident. The manhunt for the driver of the truck is ongoing after he escaped from the scene,” said Mr Ngeiywa.
