Caretakers popularly known as "shamba boys" pose insecurity in Kinanie and Magatani divisions of Athi River sub-county, Machakos county.
This is according to the areas assistant county commissioner, Rukia Chetechi who addressed a community policing and Nyumba Kumi initiatives leadership meeting at a Kyumvi hotel on Sunday.
Chetechi called on the residents to be cautious of “shamba boys” who manage homes and property of their bosses while the latter are away.
She said some of the workers turn to be criminals once sacked from their jobs by relocating to neighboring towns and forming or joining gang groups that terrorize people’s homes and business premises including those of their former employers.
Chetechi warned such criminals and urged employers to properly investigate their employees to be before hiring them and inform area chiefs once they fire them with reasons for action.
“Those working as caretakers are the ones who pose insecurity in these divisions apparently, some turn to be robbers once sacked from their jobs. You have a right to demand identification of everybody in the community whether in construction sites or private premises,” said Chetechi.
Chetechi who was accompanied by Chyumvi OCS, Chief inspector Morrison Korir, said her office will conduct more sensitizations on the initiatives for it to be fully embraced by certain individuals who were still adamant about them thinking they are meant to deprive them their rights to privacy.
