A 35 year old woman on Tuesday committed suicide after stabbing and critically injuring her three children in Kuinet, Uasin Gishu County.
The woman, Doreen Mwingi, a tailor, stabbed her three children aged 3, 8 and 13 years respectively with a knife before committing suicide by hanging herself.
Nancy Chebet, a neighbour, said the deceased had been sick for sometimes and she had just been discharged from hospital.
“The deceased has been sick and admitted for a while but was discharged yesterday. I have been helping with the house chores since she was in hospital,” said Chebet.
According to Chebet, the deceased wanted to talk to her in the evening but it was already late and could not have the conversation.
“I was told by my daughter that the deceased wanted to see me but since it was late in the evening, I decided that I would see her the next morning. But I was shocked to see her body dangling from the roof top inside the house at around 7 am,” she explained.
She added: " I Raised alarm after I could not see the children, but when other neighbors came, they found the children in a pool of blood in the other room,” she added.
The children, two boys and a girl were in critical condition after receiving head injuries were rushed to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital by neighbors where they are receiving treatment.
The neighbors described the deceased as a religious person who loved her children and wondered why she decided to attack the children by stabbing them before killing herself.
This was the first incident to happen in Kuinet and residents have called on the council of elders to conduct rituals to cleans the spirits.
Confirming the incident, Eldoret East OCPD Nelson Taliti said police are conducting investigations on the cause of the heinous crime.
“We received a report that a woman had seriously stabbed her three children on the heads using a kitchen knife and later hang herself from the roof top using a mosquito net. We are conducting investigations into the incident,” said Mr Taliti.
The incident happened as the woman’s husband was away in Narok where he works.
The body of the departed was taken to the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary while the children are undergoing treatment at the same hospital.
