The Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries Fred Sigor has called on farmers to adopt the use of new technologies to increase production.
Speaking on Monday after meeting farmers from Uasin Gishu County, Sigor said through the use of new technology, farmers will reduce their cost of production and increase production.
“I urge farmers to adopt the use of new technologies such as the use of greenhouses, artificial insemination instead of bull breeding, use certified seeds and always seek advice from extension service officers,” he said.
He said through adopting such methods, farmers will have something to smile about since they will have high production in both animal and crop farming.
“I challenge county governments to focus on training youth on agriculture since it is a sector that has potential for employment opportunities among the youth,” he added.
He however, said that the national government through the Ministry of Agriculture has made University of Eldoret a breeding centre for both animals and crops.
“The move is to ensure farmers from the region get high quality genetically modified plants and animals to produce better breeds that will reduce the cost of production for farmers and increase production,"h e said.
