Residents from Athi River's Sofia slum have been urged to ensure good sanitation to prevent outbreak of communicable diseases.
This call was made by Athi River MCA Michael Mutuku who said the slum was in disastrous situation.
"I urge all residents of Sofia Slum to be cautious on the sanitation and environment around them to avoid communicable diseases outbreaks," said Mutua.
Mutua who addressed the press at the slum on Tuesday accused majority of the residents of being insensitive of the environments they live in.
He said majority lived under very poor sanitation with improper solid and liquid waste disposal and management systems.
Mutua noted that some of the pit latrines in the area were already full while others floating during the ongoing rains thereby posing health hazards to the residents.
He called on the residents to make good use available garbage sites as designated by Machakos County government in the slum as one way of properly managing solid wastes.
Mutua also advised them to ensure their houses were clean and hands, including those of their children properly washed whenever they visit latrines, touch dirt, before they eat, among others in a bid to prevent communicable diseases such as cholera.
