The county government of Kisumu has launched a special solar lamp programme to shield residents from respiratory complications.

Most residents in the rural areas are still using the tin lamp popularly known as ‘Nyangile’ by the locals that is connected to health complications.

It is because of this that the county government has launched Operation Nyangile out.

The project that is in partnership with GIZ/Endev will enhance the health & economic well being of communities by facilitating equitable and sustainable access to solar lamps.

“This will reduce instances of respiratory diseases and improve the education status in rural households where children also study with the tin lamps,” said Kisumu governor Jack Ranguma.

The project will be buoyed by others that involve rural electrification.

On electrification, Ranguma said they have done this to Andingo Rongo, Cheptuyet and Jaber dispensaries, which will enable these dispensaries store vital vaccines and attend to emergencies brought forward, no matter the time of the day.

“We have also successfully completed the electrification of Rae Rice Mill, which will enable rice farmers to mill their paddy rice and enhance food security,” said the Kisumu governor in his speech to the county assembly members early this week.
