Traders have been warned to stop taking advantage of desperate farmers and stop buying their farm produce at a throwaway price.
Speaking to this writer, the agricultural officer of Kangundo sub-county Benson Kariuki pointed out that traders come and lure farmers and buy their grains at a low price and later sell the same grains to the farmers at a higher price.
"I want to caution farmers in this region to stop selling their produce at a throwaway price, you find that farmers sell a kilo of maize grains at Sh25 and later the traders sell the same grains at Sh50.
The same goes with beans, farmers sell a kilo at Sh30 and later buy the same grains at Sh70-80 a kilo, that's exploitation and it should stop," Kariuki further added.
"Farmers should open their eyes and realise they only making losses when they sell these grains where he urged them to preserve their grains for future use," he advised.
However speaking with some farmers, they claimed they are forced to sell their grains so that they are not attacked by pests like weevils and bring losses to them.
