Several houses and businesses premises were on Tuesday submerged by storm water following heavy down pour in Athi River town, Machakos County.
The rain which fell for close to three hours in the evening also reportedly swept away two houses and property of unknown value belonging to residents of the City Carton Slum in outskirts of the town.
Victim John Onyango who addressed the press in Athi River town on Wednesday said he was out at work away from his house within the slum when the incident happened rendering him homeless.
“I was not in when my house was swept away, had gone to work at a construction site in Athi River town where I earn my livelihood as a casual,” said Onyango.
According to Onyango, though he lost all his property to the floods apart from the clothes he had wore that day, he was happy to be alive.
“I thank God for being alive, I do not know what could have happened to me if it were that I was in the house during the incident,” said he.
Jesinter Waithera who is a single mother of two and a resident of Bondeni Slum said she lost clothes, bedding and kitchenware to the floods.
Waithera said they were swept away by the waters after she escaped from her house to seek refuge at the neighborhood.
She said her children were away in school and had not returned home during the time of the incident.
The two are now calling on well wishers to come to their rescue and help them replace their lost property to enable them continue with their lives normally.
