Slums and ghettos all over the world are usually associated with negative things like prostitution, crime and armed robberies.

But despite all this negativity, many notable leaders have grown up in these harsh environments and are now changing the world in great measures.

Kibera, regarded as one of the largest slums in Africa is home to close to 1 million people who consider this expansive, crime infested slum as home, with no running water and security a challenge, surviving in Kibera is not a walk in the park.

Forget about what you watch in the movies, this is not downtown LA or Chicago, this is a slum in a third world country in Africa.

Despite all these challenges, Kibera has produced great individuals who are now regarded as role models in the society.

All that said and done, here is a list of 6 celebrities who grew up in Kibera and are now leading the way in their respective fields.

Ken Okoth

The current Kibera law maker is not new to Kibera.

The youthful legislator was born and raised in Kibera where he attended his primary education.

The youthful is now with the responsibility of representing his constituents at the national assembly.

Johnson Mwakazi

The former Citizen Tv news anchor spent the better part of his youth life in the sprawling Kibera slums. The eloquent, light skinned Mwakazi has made a name for himself as a public and motivational speaker and does not shy away from speaking about his life experiences in Kibera.

Larry Asego

Another export from Kibera, Larry is one of Classic Fm's most influential talk show hosts. Listening to him, you might be duped into believing that Larry grew up in a posh leafy suburb somewhere in westland's, his mastery of the queens language has endeared him to radio lovers and many consider him as one of the top radio presenters in the country.

Octopizzo

When a tiny, thin Octopizzo started his career from Kibera, many dismissed him thinking that he would simply disappear into oblivion like many before him. But his hard work and resilience steered him into showbiz success making him one of the most appreciated kings of Kenyan Hip Hop.

Octopizzo is undoubtedly Kibera's finest export and the king of Kenyan Hip Hop, forget about Khaligraph.

Dennis Oliech

Dennis "The menace" " Oliech needs no introduction.

The pacy forward who terrorised defences and put Kenya on the international map is a proud son of Kibera.

Oliech started out his playing career on the dusty Kibera's roads before joining Kamukunji Secondary school where he horned his skills.

Oliech went on to play professional football in France with Nantes and Fc Ajaccio cementing his place as one of the most respected and decorated Kenyan footballers.

Kriss Darling

Not many know who he is but Reggae lovers will tell you that Kriss darling is a force to reckon with in the local music industry.

The celebrated Reggae DJ was brought up in Kibera and still lives there to date.
