Students are raising alarm over the increasing number of street children along Siriba road in Maseno.
They are afraid that they are a security threat as some are spotted until late night and with the poor lighting system students are afraid of their security.
Some of the children are believed to be sent by their parents to beg for money from the students with the latest case being of a young male child who was spotted begging for money in lecture rooms.
“These kids are very rough and threatening. One of them once followed me all the way from Siriba campus after giving him Sh10 which he claimed was too little,” said Joyce Wamboi.
A trader in Maseno said some of them spend the night outside his stalls when he closes and he is afraid of what they may do during the night.
“At the past these kids where only in Kisumu town, now I see them in Maseno sniffing glue and rough. I believe they are from Kisumu.” said Mike Okoyo.
Anne Wangeci describes of a horrible encounter with a group of the kids who tried to force her to stop, thanks to a man who was coming along that way.
“They begged me to give them money along Siriba road. I told them I had none. When I started to walk away, one stood in front of me as the other held my bag. Luckily there was a male student walking along that road. They fled on seeing him,” said Ruth Oguta.
