University and College students in Kisumu have protested over what they term increased brutal attacks and rape against students in Kisumu town.

Student unions in the town condemned the insecurity in the town and petitioned IG Joseph Boinnet to provide them with sufficient protection.

Kisumu County Students Union (Kicosu) Secretary General Fred Makajos said more than three students had been killed in the past two weeks.

He said two of the recently attacked students, one from Maseno and Kisumu National polytechnic are still nursing injuries in hospitals.

He said the trend, at which students were being attacked, robbed and raped is worrying and called for urgent intervention by the police.

“It is shocking that barely a month after Boinnet toured Kisumu over insecurity and directed a crackdown on criminals, we are being attacked in broad daylight,” Makajos said.

He said several students have been robbed laptops, IPads, phones and household goods among others.

Makajos accompanied by his Deputy Peter Isasi, Woman Representative Patricia Obilo and Kicosu Chairman Kennedy Odongo said they will organise a peaceful demonstration against insecurity.

Obilo said female students were abused sexually with some raped within their hostels.

She called on county police chiefs to heighten patrols to help fight the crime.

Odongo faulted the national government over the corruption and urged President Uhuru Kenyatta to sack those involved.

He said the students are overburdened with heavy taxes he attributed to massive corruption at county and national governments.
