A 52-year-old man is nursing critical injuries at Kiambu District Hospital after being beaten up by an angry mob for allegedly raping a 10-year-old girl in Ndumberi.

The man is receiving treatment under police guard. According to Martin Kinuthia, a bodaboda operator in Ndumberi, the suspect was caught red handed in the act in a maize farm in the area.

He said that he was taking a customer towards the direction where the man was arrested. He said that the man had tied the girl with a sock around her mouth so that she could not scream.

Mercy Wairimu, the farm owner, said she was in her house when she heard noises in her farm and she thought it was someone's cattle eating her maize.

"I went out and on a close look, I saw the man defiling the girl. I screamed loud enough to alert residents. That's when residents caught the man and beat him up," said Wairimu.

Speaking in his office, Kiambu OCPD Stephen Ng'etich said that the man was in critical condition at the Kiambu District Hospital after police rescued him from the angry mob.

He warned residents against taking law into their hands as it’s a serious offence. "I want to warn members of the public against taking law into their hands as it’s a crime on its own," said Ng'etich.

He said that the girl was also taken to hospital and she is being attended to at the same hospital.

He confirmed the man will be arraigned in court once he recovers.
