A section of Syokimau residents on Thursday held demonstrations to protest over poor roads, insecurity and water shortage in the area.

The residents, led by John Kiilu marched to the governor’s office to deliver a letter outlining their grievances.

The residents said they pay taxes and are therefore entitled to development projects just like residents from other parts of the county.

The demonstrators blocked roads paralysing transport in the area, thus prompting police officers to use teargas to disperse them.

Addressing journalists after the demonstrations, Kiilu said all they wanted was for the governor to address their grievances, but he was out of the office.

"We are tired of dealing with these issues and that is why we held the demonstrations. We want the governor to address the problems facing Syokimau resident,” said Kiilu.

One man was arrested during the demonstrations and is being held at the Machakos police station.
