Uasin Gishu County deputy Governor Daniel Chemno has urged the national government to consider sending officials issuing national Identity Cards to the grassroots to ensure more people get the document.

Speaking in his office on Monday, Chemno said most people in the villages don't have IDs because they cannot access the Registry offices due to transport costs.

"Most people in the villages  don't have the vital document because they need to travel to urban centers to access it,"he said.

The deputy county boss said it will be easier for them to get identity cards and thereafter register as voters if the service is brought closer to residents.

"It is your right to have an identity card and thereafter register as a voter. Your ID and voter's card is the weapon to get good leadership,"he said.

Chemno urged the state through county commissioners to devolve the registration of ID cards to the ward level for more people to register.

"We will work with the national government to ensure that everyone has an identity card and has registered as a voter ahead of the 2017 elections," he said
