Nyamira MCAs have once again been blamed for the persistent corruption claims rocking most county governments across the country.
Nominated Senator Daisy Nyongesa, who concluded her two-day visit in Nyamira County on Monday, said the Senate was relying on reports raised by the Auditor General to deal with corruption issues rocking many county governments yet MCAs have a prime oversight role at the county governments.
She said many of the incidents went unreported hence making her to question to role of MCAs jurisdiction and their political will to fight corruption.
“It is a shame that we are talking of corruption in the counties and yet we have MCAs who should put the executive on check. The Senate has been learning of corruption claims from the Auditor General and the media in our counties making me wonder what role MCAs play in guarding public resources,” Nyongesa said.
She said Kenyans were losing faith substantially in the countyies units following increased cases of corruption that have marred many county governments.
“We didn’t devolve corruption. Kenyans expects work at the grassroots and the Senate is jealously guarding that. But to succeed, we need to see more from MCAs because the constitution gives them authority to oversight at the county units. We want to see them dealing with corruption decisively without being compromised by county chiefs,” she said.
She however urged MCAs not to use their legislative powers to intimidate Governors.
