The Mombasa Law Court on Wednesday ordered that a terror suspect be detained for 30 days pending investigations by the police.

Mombasa Senior Principal Magistrate Simon Rotich issued the orders following an application by the investigations officers who asked for more time to enable them complete their investigations.

The suspect, Mahmoud Salim Mohammed, was taken before the court after he was suspected to have connections with the terror group Al-Shabaab.

The accused who is said to have surrendered was arrested on January 5 this year in Malindi after escaping a raid by the Anti-Terror Police Unit (ATPU).

The officers had raided a house in Majengo, Mombasa County where they found several weapons, mobile phones, SIM cards and a chemical used for making explosives.

During the case hearing, the ATPU filed an application asking the court to detain the suspect for them to complete their investigations.

The police also claimed that the accused may have information that will assist them in the investigations adding that other suspects escaped during the raid.

Magistrate Rotich ordered that the accused be detained at Central Police Station for 30 days pending the next hearing.
