Two men facing charges of illegally being in possession of guns have been linked to being part of the group that attacked Nyali Barracks.

Mohammed Mwichande Kombo and Mahmoud Salim Mohamed are accused of being part of a group that attacked Nyali Barracks on November 2, 2014.

It is alleged that on January 5, they were found with two guns stolen from a soldier and a policeman killed in Mombasa and a liquid believed to be an ingredient for an explosive.

State Counsel Wangari Mwaura told the court the accused persons are believed to be members of Al Shabaab militia group.

Counsel Mwaura further said that the two were arrested by Anti-Terror Police Unit and the rifle belonging to Private George Hongo, a soldier killed in Mombasa was recovered in their possession.

The two accused persons were also facing charges of robbing Mr Hongo of an M4 rifle which was loaded with a magazine of 30 rounds of ammunition before killing him.

The court heard that the two committed the offence on November 2, 2014 at the barracks in Kisauni sub county in Mombasa together with others not before the court.

The two were further accused of violently attempting to rob Private Solomon Onyango of a M4 rifle loaded with 30 rounds and causing damages to the firearm while armed with pangas and machetes.

The two denied the charges before Chief Magistrate Susan Shitubi and through lawyer Yusuf Abubakar filed an application to be released on bail.

Ms Mwaura however opposed the bail application arguing that their release would interfere with the ongoing investigations adding that other suspects are still at large.

Magistrate Shitubi remanded the two until February 26 when she will deliver her ruling on their bond application.
