Shoe shiners in Kibera slums have a reason to smile for the rains as their businesses are now booming.

The businessmen said on Tuesday they are raking in good sums of money as people seek their services.

Mauris Maundo of Olympic Roller Shoe Shine said his business has improved greatly since the onset of the rains.

“During the dry season, I could wait for clients for hours. And on a lucky day, I could serve between five to 10 people every morning and about six in the evening. The money I was getting was not enough to feed my family,’ said Maundo.

Bernard Okinyi who operates his business at Kamukunji market said his business is stable due to the profit he makes from the activity.

“I run two businesses; I clean shoes and also do repairs. Currently, the former is at its peak especially in the morning and evening,” said Okinyi.

“I was able to raise money from these businesses to rent my own house. Previously, I was staying with a neighbour after my house got burnt at Mashimoni. I am now stable and can even get extra cash to send to my family upcountry,” added Okinyi.
