The number of street children in Kibera slums is increasing daily.
This is because many children who are abandoned by parents and relatives end up in Kibera trying to find ways to survive. They walk around collecting broken glass and other plastic materials at dumping sites.
A spot check in Kibera shows that most street children are aged between 7 - 20 years old. Most of them are boys and they are always seen near dumping sites where food remains are thrown by residents and other items that are old.
It has been noticed that the street children are not easily affected by diseases despite the fact that they walk into dumping sites to eat.
Some of them take drugs and this does not affect them either as they are already used to the different available types.
It is very hard to find street children stealing, instead, they ask for help from residents and pedestrians who sympathise and give them money or buy food for them. Others collect plastic materials that can be recycled and sell them to recycling companies. They use the money they collect to buy food at times like soda, chips and githeri.
It is not their wish to spend their life time on the streets most of them have no homes, others are orphans, their parents disowned them and others ran away from their homes due to various reasons.
