Long ago, primary school pupils in uniform used to travel free of charge in public service vehicles, but that seems to have changed with time, and Nakuru has not been left behind.
I have been to towns such as Nairobi, Mombasa and Kisumu, where school-going children pay Sh10 in PSVs, but in Nakuru, things seem to be different.
Here, they pay Sh5 to travel to school.
On all routes within the town it is standard that all pupils pay the standard amount of five bob when travelling to school.
Daniel Waweru, a tout on the Bahati-Nakuru route says the students pay whether they are sitting or standing.
“We can’t ferry them for free in our vehicles and that is why we decided to charge all primary students Sh5 for every trip to and from school,” said Waweru.
“They all pay whether they will sit or stand but for secondary students they pay normal fares,” he adds.
That is one of the many things that make Nakuru such a unique town.
