Police in Thika town on Thursday intercepted a vehicle which was transporting bhang worth Sh800,000 at Majengo near U-shop area.

Both the driver and the vehicle’s owner whose identities are yet to be established escaped when they realised that the police were after them.

Speaking outside Thika Police Station on Thursday morning, area deputy OCPD Mary Kiarie said that she suspects the bhang was being transported from Makongeni to Nairobi for sale.

“This morning we intercepted a vehicle from Makongeni to a destination we believe was Nairobi. It had three sacks of bhang that we estimated to cost Sh800,000,” she revealed.

Kiarie said that members of the public need to volunteer information to the police on criminals, adding that the identity of the source will always be kept secret.

“The illegal commodity was being ferried by a probox car at 5:30 am in the morning,” she said.

Kiarie said the area has become a transit route for bhang from neighbouring locations to other places within the country.

She urged the public to work with the police in eliminating the illegal bhang business which he said has ruined the lives of many youths.

The vehicle was impounded and is at Thika Police Station as investigation continues.
