A cargo train stuck on the tracks brought the town of Limuru to a standstill for hours on Tuesday.
This was after the long train abruptly stopped on its trucks blocking the Bata-Tigoni road. The road is crucial connecting Limuru town to Ruaka, Tigoni, Banana, Kabuku and Kiambu town.
The most affected were the matatu operators who ply those routes as they were stuck in the town with nowhere to go.
A group of matatu touts were spotted speaking to one of the train officers.
Kamau wa Ngugi, a tout for route 116 to Banana, said they were inquiring whether the train would start moving soon but said they did not get a concrete answer.
Peter Waweru who transports passengers to Kabuku was also affected by the stalled train.
Waweru directed passengers who were lost on where to go next, to jump over the train at the point where the containers are connected and be carried by matatus that were on the other side of the train.
“Matatus coming back to Limuru are dropping off passengers where they encounter the train, and passengers can climb and jump over the train and be carried by those matatus on the other side. It is a bad day, however for us who were still at the bus stage,” said Ngugi.
John Mwangi who was going to Polypipe factory to order for some wares opted to walk to the place because the road was blocked.
Some vehicles sought to carry passengers through the longer route using the Nakuru-Nairobi highway, but passengers were reluctant of boarding because the fare was doubled.
