Long distances truck drivers and commercial sex workers are to blame for the high HIV infection rate that has currently hit Nakuru county.
According to National Aids Control Council regional coordinator Hillary Chepsiror, the two groups are to blame for the spread of the deadly scourge while revealing the county has recorded 4,000 new infections in 2015 alone.
Chepsiror said the strategic location of the county between the capital and the Western Kenya made it a hub of illicit leisure.
He says most truck drivers halted their journey to take a rest and to engage in illicit and unprotected sex with commercial sex workers whom he said had also increased drastically in major towns in the county.
"As we speak the council has just released a report on the state of HIV/AIDS across the country and our county is indicated to have had a huge increase in the number of new infections this year.
However, this has greatly been contributed by commercial sex workers who have increased in this county and truck drivers who stop along parts of the county to take a rest and engage in risky sexual behavior," he revealed.
In the report that was released by NACC, the county had about 66,000 residents living with the virus with a majority being the young people.
However, the coordinator also revealed that the council had launched a strategic plan targeting mostly the youth and women to help alleviate the situation.
