The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has yet again been slammed by a Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) official, saying it had delayed recruitment of primary school teachers.

Speaking at Nyabiosi Primary School in Gesima on Tuesday, Masaba Knut branch deputy secretary James Oteki said the teachers' employer was slow in recruitment of primary school teaches leading to under staffing in many institutions.

According to him, many teachers who completed their training since 2006 were still unemployed yet the country is trying to fight poor quality education in primary schools across the country.

“I have been going through records and I can conclude that TSC is delaying recruitment of primary school teachers yet many schools are facing under staffing. It’s absurd that even teachers who finished college 10 years ago are still unemployed. Time has come to revisit the issue if we have to talk about quality education,” he said.

Oteki said many primary schools were likely to continue struggling with under performance due to inability by existing number of teachers to handle rapid population in the primary education which is sponsored by the government.

“Since the introduction of free primary education, many institutions are trying to cope up with exponential population growth in the institutions. We are likely to continue experiencing poor quality education in those learning institutions if the government does not expedite recruitment of teachers,” he added.

He however lauded recruitment in the secondary schools which he said had been updated up to 2012 but a number of 2013 graduates having been already employed.
