A child and a middle-aged man on Sunday afternoon drowned in a water pan in Kudho area in the outskirts of Kisumu city.
The child was the first to drown and was noticed by a motorcyclist passing by and in the rush to help, he also drowned.
Migosi MCA Paul Achayo said the water pan came as a result of the quarry, where a road construction company was extracting murram and with the ongoing rains in Western Kenya, it is now full of water.
“The water pan is big and according to the locals, it is deep and that might pose a challenge in retrieving the bodies,” he said.
Achayo said efforts to retrieve the bodies have borne no fruits fro close to three hours since the incident happened and the search is still on.
“Members of the public and the police have joined hands to carry out the search and hopefully the bodies will be retried before sunset,” he said.
Achayo said the child went to draw some water from the pan and slipped, the cries for help attracted the attention of people who were passing.
“It is unfortunate that the person who went to save the child has also slipped and died in the pool of water,” he said.
