The fire, which started at around 8pm, razed down a large section of stalls in the market, and according to an eyewitness who operates a business around the fire incident, the inferno was allegedly sparked by an electric fault in one of the stalls identified as Vision hotel.

Business people in the area expressed their displeasure towards the county government of Nyamira for their slow response, saying that they pay taxes and therefore expect good services.

"Once again the county government has failed us. We seriously need a fire engine in our county. Businesses have been burnt to ashes. It's extremely sad," said Roden Mariera, a resident.

However, in a combined effort, the traders and locals were able to put out the fire by use of water and soil.

Two casualties, a man and woman were reported and are currently receiving treatment at the Nyamira Level Four Hospital.

Investigations on cause of the fire are ongoing.
