Police have gunned down two suspected criminals at Makasembo area in Kisumu on Sunday night.
Assistant Inspector General Joseph Keitany said the suspects were shot dead by Quick Response Team near Moi Stadium.
“The police ordered them to stop but they defied the orders and tried to escape,” Keitany said.
Speaking to the press in Kisumu town, Keitany said the suspects were spotted by QRT on patrol.
He said the suspects were armed with a toy pistol and crude weapons such as a panga, knife and Maasai sword.
Keitany said they recovered police and KDF uniforms from the slain suspects. He said they suspects the two were planning to rob the nearby shops.
He added that the suspects are believed to be part of the “40 Brothers” gang who have been terrorising the residents.
“We are sending a warning to criminals to either surrender or move out of Kisumu town because they won’t be tolerated,” Keitany said.
This comes barely two days after police arrested three suspects and recovered AK47 rifle after raiding a home in Riat on the outskirts of Kisumu town.
Police also found five bullets, electronics and household goods following a tip off from the public.
Nyanza police coordinator Willy Lugusa said the suspects led them to house where the gun was found.
He said the owner of the house escaped and is still being pursued by police.
