Uasin Gishu County Maendeleo ya Wanawake chairperson Anne Kibet has faulted President Uhuru Kenyatta over his failure to observe the gender rule during his Cabinet reshuffle on Tuesday evening.

Speaking in her office on Wednesday, Kibet termed Uhuru’s move unconstitutional as he appointed only five women as ministers instead of seven, to meet the one-third rule.

Uhuru’s Cabinet has 20 ministerial slots up from the previous 19.

“According to the constitution, the President is supposed to name at least one third of the women in all his government appointments,” she said.

The chairperson said the President must adhere to the constitution and ensure the gender rule is upheld to ensure women also participate in building the nation just like their male counterparts.

“It’s not only in the national but also in the county governments where they don’t consider women in leadership. Gone are the days when women were only viewed as housewives. We urge them to give us opportunities and we will show them how it is done,” she added.

She challenged women not to shy away from leadership positions.
