Teachers Service Commission (TSC) Vice Chairperson Cleophas Tirop has blamed teachers' unions for misleading teachers on signing performance contracts, making them to shun the proposal.
Speaking on Wednesday after paying a courtesy call to Uasin Gishu County Deputy Governor Daniel Chemno, Mr Tirop said the aim of TSC is to improve service delivery, promote teachers and not to harass them.
"It's sad that teachers' union officials are going round the country misleading teachers not to sign the performance contracts saying that it's ill intended. As teachers' employer, we want to appraise our teachers. How could we do that if we cannot know their performance?" he posed.
He said by signing the performance contracts, it will be easier to know performing and non-performing teachers.
"I urge teachers' union officials to stop misleading teachers on signing of performance contracts and I ask teachers to sign them since it's for their own good," he said.
He added that negotiations between the unions, TSC and the government on teachers' payment increment is on going and they will soon reach a consensus.
