Ministry of Water principal secretary James Teko has attributed lack of funds and poor governance to water challenges in the country.
Teko said the country has adequate water resources that if utilised prudently will sustain the population.
He called upon water providers to be efficient in the way water resources are managed in the country.
“Lack of funds is the main reason why we are facing a lot of challenges in addressing water shortage in the county, poor governance is another impediment to address these challenges,” he said.
The PS said there is need to evaluate what Kenya has in terms of water resource to be able to plan effectively.
Speaking in Kisumu on Monday when he opened a two-week training of water drillers, Teko further called upon non state actors to work together with the government in providing water to the locals.
He said there should be a structured partnership to be able to spread the provision of water to all Kenyans.
Teko said there has been duplication of projects in the country due to lack of coordination between the government and other organizations.
“We must work together as a team, I don’t want a situation where for example World Vision is drilling water in an area where the government or another NGO plans to drill water. We need collaborate on such issues,” he said.
The training was sponsored by a nongovernmental organization, Living Water and the training to be conducted by Kenya Water Institute officials.
